SA Lockdown: Liquor traders feel the sting

Published by: | Date: July 23, 2020 | No Comment

Small liquor traders around Durban have taken a knock due to government’s latest ban on booze sales.

Some of these liquor traders say that they had already stocked up and now worry their goods will expire.

Obviously, Ten City Tavern in Newlands West, Durban has been in business for over 20 years.

A lot of fun-lovers love coming to the establishment, but due to the recent ban on alcohol sales, it is facing a tough time.

Unfortunately, four of its eight staff members have already lost their jobs.

Busisiwe Shange, Ten City Tavern Owner had his to say:

I had bought a lot of stock and then government announced a 21-day lockdown.

We hoped that after 21 days our stock would still be fine, and then the lockdown was extended and our stock expired and I lost a lot of money because I couldn’t sell. Even this time around I think I’m going to lose again because I had bought some more.”

A woman around her middle 20s known as Zikhona Ngcobo has been sitting and struggling at home. She worked as a bar assistant for six years.

But now that the ban has been in effect, she has to rely solely on her two children through child support grant.

Although some of the BIG MEN in the industry support the effort of the government to curb the spread of COVID-19 and to free up hospitals.

But as it stands, these BIG MEN in the industries fear that this prolonged ban on booze sales will push them to their faces for their businesses.
